MHA #10- Saturday evening

With the way things had been going for everyone over the last few weeks, Kitty and Allie had decided it might be good to have a small, semi-quiet apartment party with friends where nothing traumatic happened and they could have fun.

Aaand then Kitty got in from California too late yesterday to get much of anything done so a lot of today was spent cleaning, shopping, and finding some game off the Internet, because with the group they'd invited, it might be good to have something to focus on rather than just glaring at people across the room. Which they'd probably do anyway, but at least it wouldn't be their whole night.

By the time people were due to start showing up, everything had been set up, the place looked presentable, and the pizza had gotten here in time for Kitty to box up a couple pieces for Lucky already, because shut up, that's why.

All things considered, Éponine really shouldn't have been up and about just yet; she was still pale (well, slightly more so than usual) and shaky, not to mention exhausted despite sleeping almost all day. But she didn't care to spend any more time cooped up in a stranger's house, and anyhow (thanks in part to a crash course on electricity and modern indoor plumbing) she was still mostly convinced this was all a very long, realistic dream, so she was curious to see if and when the dream would end.

So she'd come along with Allie and found herself a corner to just sit and watch people unobtrusively, something she was good at -- though she hadn't hesitated to help herself to some of the food, no. She was curled up against the wall In a borrowed shirt and her own worn corduroy trousers (though she'd managed to get those washed at some point during the day) but still barefoot, an inquisitive if distracted expression on her face. Every now and then she would look down at her right hand and wiggle her fingers, then laugh. Which might come across as slightly unhinged, yes, and if you thought that you might not be wrong.

Éponine looked up from where she was examining the back of her hand, a surprised expression on her face. "Yes, that's right," she said just a touch warily (it was habit). "You're a friend of Allie's, I take it?"

Éponine looked at her for a few seconds, like she wasn't quite sure whether she'd decided Kitty meant it or not, then finally settled for an awkward nod of gratitude. "It's a very nice place," she said vaguely, meaning both the town and the apartment. "Especially if it doesn't mind my turning up unexpectedly."

The only reason she wasn't stuffing her face right now was that it made her sick if she tried. (Because she had.)

"I'll be fine, I'm sure," Éponine told her. "How funny, though, that people just blunder into this place all the time!"

Clint was often a little wary of strangers, but he was also pretty good at reading people, and this girl didn't seem like she was all that dangerous. He approached her with a friendly smile in the hope that he'd come off as safe as well. "Hey. Uh, welcome to the party."

He did seem fairly safe, but Éponine made a general practice of staying slightly wary around strangers. Still, there was a difference between being guarded (which she was) and looking like she was ready to bolt for the door at a moment's notice (which she wasn't).

"I hope you don't mind if I'm not at my most festive tonight," she replied. It's nice of you to have me."

Or, you know, not kick her out. One or the other.

"Eh, we've got enough festive to go around already," he said. "I'm Clint Barton, I'm one of the teachers up at the school, among other things."

"Hi," Jack said slowly. "Don't take this the wrong way, but you look very new."

"You're not wrong, monsieur," Éponine replied with just a touch of (mostly good-natured) sarcasm. "I've only arrived today, though I'm still not convinced I haven't made all this up in my head."

There was a pink pony in the apartment. This was not lending credence to the 'this is actually real' argument.
