throughaphase | MHA #10- Saturday evening

With the way things had been going for everyone over the last few weeks, Kitty and Allie had decided it might be good to have a small, semi-quiet apartment party with friends where nothing traumatic happened and they could have fun.

Aaand then Kitty got in from California too late yesterday to get much of anything done so a lot of today was spent cleaning, shopping, and finding some game off the Internet, because with the group they'd invited, it might be good to have something to focus on rather than just glaring at people across the room. Which they'd probably do anyway, but at least it wouldn't be their whole night.

By the time people were due to start showing up, everything had been set up, the place looked presentable, and the pizza had gotten here in time for Kitty to box up a couple pieces for Lucky already, because shut up, that's why.

Jack took a slice of cheese pizza and sat on the couch, where he could get a good look at people as they came in. He realized as he surveyed the group that he was probably about the median age for the room; that in itself was still a bit novel.

"Hey," Kitty greeted him. "Glad you could make it."

"I'm glad you invited me," Jack answered, with a quick smile. "It's nice of you to host something like this."

"I think we all needed it," she told him. "More fun, less trauma. At least for a night."

"Knock wood," Jack said, ding just that (or a close approximation) on a nearby surface. "It has been an interesting few weeks, hasn't it? And I've been here too long to assume Valentine's Day week will be normal."

"It probably won't be. I think I've decided if we don't get candy heart rain at least once, I'll be a little disappointed," she admitted. And she'd take it in a second over Argents and emo.

"That would be adorable," Jack admitted. "It might sting a bit if you went out in it, but -- free candy."

"Just carry around an umbrella upside down and you could get all the diabetes you could ever need," she said.

"I'm sure somebody has tried that," Jack said. "I keep thinking about getting some gallon jugs for next time we get hot chocolate or wine from the taps."

"Jack." Hey, look! Derek was being social! Look at him being social!

All on his own.

"Derek," Jack echoed. "You left the house."

And not even to lurk! Much.

"I'm not actually a hermit." Yet.

"I don't think hermits have housemates," Jack agreed thoughtfully. "Let alone puppies or jobs."

"He won't be a puppy much longer." He would just be a puppy in their hearts.

Jack looked sad. "He's not allowed to grow up. Make him stop."

"I don't think I can manage that, Jack." It's okay. He'll take you out drinking to get over it.

"I suppose not," Jack said. "Time passes. The sun rises and sets. Puppies turn into dogs."

"...They invited the pony, didn't they?"

The word 'hello' was meant for people Kaidan didn't see every day.

"Looks like it," Jack agreed, unperturbed by the lack of greeting. "I suppose you don't want to make a pony feel left out."

"I guess that could only end in tears," Kaidan agreed. "Though now I wonder if Kitty and Allie were considerate enough with the snack placing... can ponies even eat pizza?"

One of the world's more existential questions.

"I don't think a normal pony could, but I'm not about to tell the pink one she can't," Jack said firmly. "Though I'm wondering how she climbed the stairs."

"Ponies can't climb stairs?"

Kaidan hadn't been around a horse for more than five minutes in his life.

Jack shook his head. "At least, horses can't," he clarified. "Something about the way their joints work."

"Huh," Kaidan said succinctly. "I'm gonna go pick up some food - you want anything?"

Jack shook his head. "Go ahead. I'm happy with the pizza for now."
