Costume shop on the mainland- Monday afternoon

Another year, another hunt for a suitable costume. After her stuff was done for the day, Kitty and Irene set out for the costume store for some quality shopping time.

"Okay, I don't know about you," Kitty said as they walked in, "but I have no real idea of what I want yet."

This was how you ended up dressed as a giant banana, probably.

"Considering that my usual method of fancy dress isn't going to probably work for a Halloween anything where teenagers might be present," Irene agreed, looking around the shop with an already-critical eye, "I tend to agree. What'd you dress up as last year?"

"I think last year was the pirate year," Kitty said, glancing around. "Though I had to de-ho the costume a little, I think. What were you?"

"I'm usually terribly guilty of being the person who wears lingerie and cat ears," Irene admitted with a small smile. "Perhaps it's time for a bit more creativity. And de-hoing."

"There's nothing wrong with ho'ing it up if you want to," Kitty told her, browsing through a rack. "...But lingerie might be a bad idea if students show up, yeah."

"Might be cute if you did the cat ears thing, though," Irene pointed out, because puns were amusing. "Because you know. You're a Kitty, and all."

"And that is exactly why I don't do it," Kitty grinned. "It never stops at just one joke."

"It's not especially clever, either," Irene said, a touch apologetic. "You'd spend the whole night harassed by people who think they're the first ones to say it. You could always subvert it and go as a puppy, but I suppose that comes with its own nasty jokes."

"Probably," she said, thinking about it and making a face. "I did try on the Sexy Owl costume one year though."

"Is that just glasses and a feather in your hair or something?" Irene asked, wrinkling her nose in return. "That'd...be difficult. Owls are not exactly inherently sexy birds."

"If I'm remembering correctly, it was a- Oh, oh, here we go," Kitty said, pulling the costume off the rack. "I think the one I tried was different. Same principle."

"What's next?" Irene asked, staring in abject horror at the costume. "Sexy chickens?"

She paused, glancing at the rack and frowning. "Oh, yes, here we are." Because chickens were sexy, right? Something something breasts. She could see it.

"I can think of like six jokes off the top of my head that make that a terrible idea for a costume," Kitty said.

"And here's the male counterpart, in case one wants to label oneself as 'that especially creepy bloke that no one should talk to,'" she said, holding it out with an arched brow. "I'm all for tasteless puns, but not wearing them. Who buys these things?"

You were in college once, Irene, come on.

"People who the terrible pickup lines will work on?" Kitty guessed, and pulled out another costume. "Wanna be a SWAT officer? I'm sure the exposed legs and fishnets really help in the field!"

"I'm sure," Irene said dryly, staring at the costume for a moment before glancing at the rack and pulling out something horribly flimsy (http://www.yandy.com/Military-Babe-Costume-4290.php). "But I'm much more a...what's this say? Military Babe</>. That seems practical, right? Look at all that ammunition."

"Oh my god," Kitty gaped. "I feel like every military type person in Fandom just had a collective twitch attack and doesn't know why."

"Is this not how the American military really is?" Irene asked innocently. "It seemed a touch skimpy for a standard uniform."

"See, I think we're more used to this. Slightly more covered," she said, holding another one up. "Is it wrong I don't think this is terrible? Comparatively?"

"Comparatively," Irene agreed, tilting her head at the costume. "What d'you suppose the harness is meant for?"

Because that thing would not hold under any duress. Expert opinion.

"Kinky comments?" Kitty suggested, putting it back. "I seriously think most of the really bad stuff is made specifically for people to use bad one-liners as icebreakers."

"But who the hell does that work on?" Irene asked, her nose wrinkling in distaste as she considered another horrifying option (http://www.yandy.com/ANITA-SEDATIVE.php). "I'm not sure I've ever been that drunk, you know?"

Kitty stared. "Oh god why. You know all that enters someone's head when they see that has to be 'this way to crazy girl stalking,'" she said. "Also how do you do anything in that?"

"I suppose it necessitates that you have a buddy," Irene said, smiling a little. "So that's the opening! 'Hey, babe, do you need me to pour jelly shots into your mouth for you all night, seeing as how you have no hands?' And other romantic little meet-cutes like that."

"Yes, 'romantic,'" Kitty nodded. "Oh what the hell is this."

Irene was just going to stare for a long, long moment.

That seems historically accurate," she said finally. "Though thank goodness those studs are where they are." Otherwise that was very deceptive fabric.
