Costume shop on the mainland- Monday afternoon

Another year, another hunt for a suitable costume. After her stuff was done for the day, Kitty and Irene set out for the costume store for some quality shopping time.

"Okay, I don't know about you," Kitty said as they walked in, "but I have no real idea of what I want yet."

This was how you ended up dressed as a giant banana, probably.

"Uhh, maybe not a ninja," Kitty said, and explained. "There was a whole ninja thing."

Also she could say for a fact that ninjas didn't dress like that.

Well, now Irene had questions. "Ninja thing?"

"I went to Japan, and had to fight a bunch of ninjas," Kitty said, with the level of annoyance usually reserved for 'and I had to sit in traffic all morning.'

"Oh, of course," Irene said, nodding along. "Who hasn't had to fight a bunch of ninjas?"

"My life is weirder than most people's," Kitty said, holding up another costume.

"No one's life is weird enough to necessitate wearing that," Irene assured her, wincing. "That'd be no fun at a party. Imagine trying to manage a drink."

"Whatever you do, don't try to shake anyone's hand," Kitty said, and put it back to flip through some others. "And here's our 'insultingly sexist superhero' section..."

"Aww, Kitty." Irene shook her head. "Are you telling me this (http://www.yandy.com/Supergirl-Corset-Costume.php) isn't the sort of thing you all wear? But it seems so supportive and practical for running around and tying bad guys to streetlamps or whatever it is you do."

"I know, it's gotta be a shock, but garter belts are not part of the typical superhero wear," Kitty said. "...Unless you're Emma. I actually do know some people with ridiculous costumes but I doubt that one would stand up very long in a fight."

"I think I'd mostly worry about bouncing right out of that top, though I suppose that'd work well as a distraction." Which was probably why this Emma person did such a thing.

"If it makes you feel better," she added, spying something across the aisle and retrieving it (http://www.yandy.com/Dominatrix-Costume-Kit.php), "this isn't representative of what I do in my spare time, either." As though she'd ever wear nylon.

Well now she had to ask. "What do you wear?"

Irene smiled coyly, putting it back on the shelf. "Depends on the client. Almost always heels. Some people like lingerie, some people like leather, but that's no more a 'dominatrix costume' than it is just a nightie that someone decided to unfortunately make out of terribly unforgiving fabric."

"Huh. And here this is a subject I never thought I'd learn about," Kitty said. And she'd read all the dirty books she could get her hands on as a preteen.

"Oh, I'm more than happy to answer any and all questions you might have, darling," Irene assured her, though she was mildly distracted by looking at the props, now, and plucked up a pair of handcuffs.

"These wouldn't hold anyone," she noted with a wrinkle of her nose. "I get that it's for the pickup line factor, but some authenticity would be nice, wouldn't it? Otherwise what's the point?"

"I wonder how many complaint letters they get because the handcuffs didn't hold out," Kitty said.

"Well, they'd go with about half the costumes here, so I'd think quite a few," Irene mused. "Irritated letters from cops, and dominatrices, and SWAT team members, and possibly some superheroes...."

"I can't think of any superheroes off the top of my head that use handcuffs," she said thoughtfully.

Except for, you know. Cough.

"You all have different methods to apprehend the evildoers?" Irene asked, raising a brow. "Or is it a case of the evildoers not necessarily being well-restrained by something as flimsy as cuffs?"

"Both, depending on the case," Kitty replied. "Sometimes you just have to knock 'em out, or find a way to restrain them on the fly till the cops show up. Plus handcuffs don't go very well with spandex."

Unless it was the 90's and you had four hundred pockets.

"They go marvelously with leather." Shh, Irene. "So you're not the cops, technically? Is there a conflict of authority there over who handles what?"

She'd seen movies! Half the time the cops seemed very into summoning their superheroes using creative lighting, and the other half of the time they printed outrageous news headlines calling them menaces.

Kitty shook her head. "Not the cops at all. More vigilantes, if I'm being honest. But the cities and world and space get attacked a lot so we do more than just bringing in criminals. And cops are generally not fans. Especially when it comes to mutants."

There was a lot to process there, but Irene was going to pick the most interesting, immediately. "Space?" she prompted, lifting her brows.

"Oh. Yeah, aliens exist. And space gets lets fun when some of the aliens have nasty teeth," she admitted.

"I knew about the aliens," Irene clarified, and that was yet another phrase she had never imagined herself saying. "I just didn't know that exactly fell within your jurisdiction, so to speak."

"Sometimes, depending on what's going on," Kitty said. "And I've had friends who've been hosts to cosmic entities and things like that."
