Kitty could tell you how many days old Lexi was (fifteen) but unless she was looking at her phone, she was sort of lost on the day of the week. Or usually what time of day it was, since going to sleep and staying asleep all night was probably not a thing that was happening ever again. She changed what loungewear she was wearing every day? Was that a good marker of time?

And yet she still had stuff to do. Work work in addition to other stuff that had to get done around the house and all the baby stuff. She wasn't back to bartending yet, but she was still doing the paperwork side of business running, and so she had her laptop open while Lexi laid on the couch next to her, though the baby kept taking most of her attention. "I thought you were supposed to be helping me work," Kitty told her. "Pick up the slack, kid."

"Lexi, don't cry at Steve," Kitty told her, before holding her out for him.

Steve held her like she was made of crystal. "Hello, small person," he said. "I'm Steve."

Lexi, got her part, yawned.

"Don't take that as a reflection on you," Kitty advised.

Steve laughed. "It's better than screaming?"

"I told you she was a chill kid," Kitty smiled.

"I don't think any kid of mine would be chill," Steve said, rocking Lexi a bit.

"You never know. They're their own little people." She paused. "It's easier to say that when I know what her personality is going to be."

Steve smiled a little wistfully. "I don't think kids are in the cards for me for a while, if at all. So I'll just borrow other people's and spoil them."

"That's okay. I'm encouraging spoiling in this case," she told him. In fact, it might be a competition.

"Well, she has inherited a raft of pretend uncles around here," Steve said. "Heavily armed, highly trained uncles."

[throughaphase]

"She's got some back home, too. Along with an actual uncle. You know, I think I'm figuring out why she gets away with everything..."

Figuring it out this early would not help.

"She's three minutes old," Steve said, glancing down just to check that was still true. "What's she getting away with already?"

"In the future, I mean. Also we're letting her live here rent-free like a slacker," Kitty pointed out.

[heroic_jawline]

"I had a job already," Steve teased, grinning. "In a factory."

"See, why can't you be more like Steve?"

Lexi closed her eyes for a few seconds, maybe just to let them know she did not care.

"Oh, don't be like me," Steve said. "No one wants to work in a factory these days."

"I'm talking work ethic," Kitty assured him. "Obviously she's going to start out as a CEO or President."

"In that case, young lady, you need to talk with Tony. Who has to go to a meeting this week even though he did everything short of calling out with a missing limb to miss," Steve said with a grin.

[throughaphase]

"So I'm guessing it's not a fun meeting," Kitty said wryly.

[heroic_jawline]

"I'm not sure Tony believes that any meeting is a fun meeting," Steve said.

Kitty thought about it. "I'm not sure he's wrong?"

"To be very honest, I'm not either, but one of us has to pretend to like going to meetings, and that's clearly going to be me," Steve said.
