A store on the mainland- Saturday

Kitty really did like shopping with Derek. He had good taste, she liked hanging out with him, and she could usually find something to tease him about, so it was a good time. She wasn't so happy about the reason for this shopping excursion, though, since the reason was that if you kept wearing kinda slutty things to work just because you could, eventually someone was going to say something.

Which was still a little weird to her, because she'd worn questionable things through her teen years and no one did ever say anything. Because the X-Men were terrible at setting boundaries, that's why.

Even as they walked into the store, Kitty said, "The top wasn't even that bad, you know. You didn't even see it."

Damn her logic. "Fine."

He was going to buy the best pants he could now, Kitty. Just to make up for it.

"Good," she said, smiling as she picked up a shirt that was maybe a little low-cut. "Where does this fall on your 'no' spectrum?"

"Go any lower and I'm buying pants on my own."

[throughaphase]

"But this is acceptable?" she checked.

[justlurkinghere]

"It works. See if they have a brighter color." Because she can wear color, but not him.

[throughaphase]

"We're going after the colors, too, huh?" She did look for one, though, and picked up one in blue.

[justlurkinghere]

"Choices," Derek replied dryly. "It gives you choices."

Like all the henleys he owned in varying shades of 'oh god, there is no joy'.

[throughaphase]

"Like how you choose to wear no color?" Kitty asked.

[justlurkinghere]

"I'm not drawing attention to myself like a peacock," Derek shot back.

[throughaphase]

Kitty paused. "Are you saying I'm drawing attention to myself, or you don't want to look like a bird?"

[justlurkinghere]

Derek sighed, tossing another shirt at her. "The bird one. It's my delicate features."

[throughaphase]

"And now I have a goal to get you wearing a color," Kitty decided.

[justlurkinghere]

"I wear blue." A muted blue.

[throughaphase]

"A brighter color," she amended.

[justlurkinghere]

"Like I said, I don't like drawing attention." Because wearing black helped with that. Really.

[throughaphase]

"Wearing a color means a couple people will comment 'Oh hey, you're wearing a color' and then no one will care," Kitty pointed out.

"They might think I was a pod person." True story.

[throughaphase]

"And then you say 'Kitty made me.' They'll buy it," she said.

[justlurkinghere]

"Except the 'made me' part."

[throughaphase]

"'Dared me to?'"

One day Derek was going to wake up to find colors in his closet- or whatever served as one- because he'd made the mistake of befriending someone who walked through walls.

Really, he should just hope she didn't team up with Pinkie Pie.

"I will get one shirt with a color you pick," Derek replied. "And I have veto power."

[throughaphase]

"Deal," Kitty said. "I like that we can work together like this."

[justlurkinghere]

Derek just snorted, flipping through a rack of shirts. And then was instantly sobered by the fact that she reminded him of Laura right then.

[throughaphase]

"What?" she asked, looking at him over the rack.

[justlurkinghere]

"Try that one," he said instead of using his words to expression emotions, shoving another shirt that was way too low a V for his rules.
