Kitty hadn't paid that much attention. She saw ice cream in the freezer, so naturally she had to get a spoon and have some, even if it wasn't even lunch yet.

A second later though, she found a paper towel to spit it into- something that should never have to be done with ice cream- and picking up the container to see why it tasted so weird. It looked fine, but seriously, were those pork rinds in there?

"No," she told the container seriously. "No."

[Can be open! I had to keep the trend going.]

There was a knock on the door, and on the other side of that door was Éponine, with a container of ice cream in her hand and a frown on her face.

All she'd wanted when she dropped by the Kwik-Stop was something cool and sweet to make the prospect of trudging around on her mail route a little less daunting today. She had not wanted . . . well, whatever this was.

So she had to take a detour and complain about it. Lucky you, Kitty.

When Kitty opened the door, she asked, "Please tell me you're here with a delivery of like, industrial strength mouthwash."

"What in God's name is this, d'you think?" Éponine asked immediately, gesturing with the pint of ice cream -- which had a spoon stuck in it at a weird angle, like she'd tried to stab the ice cream in a fit of pique. Which was actually what she'd done, yes, because it had been a perfectly nice pint of neapolitan until she found out that the stuff embedded it it was pork rind.

. . . so that would be a no.

Also hi, Kitty.

"Okay, you got it too?" Kitty asked. Stabbing it was totally warranted, she thought. "Fandom shouldn't be allowed to be weird on a Monday. It's inhumane."

"What d'you mean by -- so that's why you were asking about mouthwash! Good lord, so you've had the same stroke of bad luck. Fandom thinks it's funny, doesn't it?" asked Éponine, who sounded incredibly insulted by this. "Well, it's not terribly funny this time. What a thing to do to ice cream, to say nothing of to us!"

[throughaphase]

"Nothing's sacred anymore," Kitty frowned. "Do you need something to wash down the gross?"

[filleauloup]

"No, it's all right, I suppose I'll eat it anyhow," Éponine grumbled, but really, it was food and she wasn't going to waste it. "I'll just dig around the funny pork bits; god knows I've had worse, and the salt isn't so bad with the sweetness after all. It's only the pork rind bits that are awful, now they're soggy and funny-tasting and good lord, I don't want to have to chew on those! How's that for an unpleasant surprise instead? I wonder how many other people have got the same problem?"

[throughaphase]

"No idea, but we should all be able to like, sue Fandom, or something, I don't know," Kitty said. "You'd think it'd at least skip the half-Jewish households, jeez."

[filleauloup]

"What's that got to --" Forgive Éponine, she was still catching up in some areas of cultural awareness, but she was frowning as if trying to think it through. "Oh -- something about the pork, isn't it?"

[throughaphase]

"Yeah, it's on the no-no list if you're trying to keep kosher," she said. "Luckily I'm not hugely strict about it and this was not my fault anyway. Why can't we just have surprise chocolate instead?"

[filleauloup]

"We ought to, now, to make up for this, that's what I think," Éponine decided. She pulled the spoon out of her now-melting ice cream and started to scrape some up, taking care to avoid the pork rind as much as possible. "So of course it's not likely to happen at all until we've forgotten all about it, isn't it? Never mind! See if I don't drop by and bring you chocolate anyhow."

[throughaphase]

"You so don't have to do that," Kitty told her.

[filleauloup]

"But I could get chocolate for myself at the same time if I did," Éponine pointed out practically.

[throughaphase]

"Or you could just get double the chocolate," Kitty pointed out.

[filleauloup]

Éponine actually looked tempted by that, for a second or two, but she shook her head.

"Oh, I could, that's for sure, but it's the nice thing to do, isn't it, sharing it? I think I ought to do that, especially since the ice cream's ruined for you now."

"Ruined ice cream should be a crime," Kitty muttered. She really meant that, too.
