Avengers Tower to Genosha- Sunday afternoon
![]() Xavier | The Avengers had a new "mansion," which was really a skyscraper in the city that they hadn't told the world was their new headquarters. Kitty'd had to leave Clint at the school when she and her team had been called to this meeting, where they'd been given no details on what was happening or what it was about. They just went off to Avengers Tower, landed the Blackbird- discreetly- and let Jarvis lead them to what looked like a conference room filled with Avengers. More or less. A few of them were in civilian clothes, since they weren't currently on the roster. Kitty knew Carol Danvers already, and then there was a moment where she realized she knew Sam Wilson from Fandom, and then there was... Simon? The artist formerly known as Wonder Man, anyway. And there amongst them was Charles Xavier. "X-Men," he greeted them. |
Kitty | The last time Kitty had seen him, she'd been pretty crushed after finding out that he'd basically kept the sentient Danger Room prisoner. And it wasn't that Kitty didn't still hate that, it was just... he was the second closest thing she had to a father, and before she even knew it, she was running over to hug him. Sorry, Avengers, you had to see the youngest X-Man be five. "Kitty," he said, and his hug back was a little stiff, but he did it. "I hated how things ended between us-" |
Cyclops | Yeah, about that. "You made it quite clear you weren't going to be involving yourself with us, and you weren't exactly nice about it," Cyclops said, but he and Xavier managed a handshake around Kitty's hug anyway. |
![]() Xavier | "Yes, well, obviously something more important has come up," Xavier replied. He waited until Kitty had dislodged herself and everyone had taken a step back, and began speaking to the room at large. "I have made this special trip to New York to discuss with you an almost impossible matter," he said. "We need to decide the fate of Wanda Maximoff." |
Emma | Two months ago, the Avengers had been attacked. This universe's Ant-Man, Hawkeye and The Vision were all killed, the Wasp had almost died, She-Hulk was thrown into jail. When the dust settled, they'd discovered that it was Wanda, the Scarlet Witch, who'd been the cause of it. To make a long story extremely short, unable to have children of her own, her reality-warping abilities had enabled her to falsely create twins, who were taken away. Her memory had been altered, and when she remembered, she'd essentially had a nervous breakdown, which caused the attack even though she didn't mean it. She'd been taken away by her father Magneto, and no one had heard from her since. Apparently he and Xavier had kept her on Genosha. Wanda wasn't doing any better, and she had to be sedated, her memory consistently altered, in order to keep her even reasonably stable. There were concerns about the futility of their help, and what would happen if it didn't do any good in the end. They remembered that she'd killed three Avengers, including her own husband, before anyone even knew what was happening. They worried that this wasn't any kind of life for her. They worried about sustaining this. And it was all explained in exhausting detail. "What is there to say?" Emma said finally. "Put her down." |
![]() Spider-Man | "Put her down?" Spider-Man repeated, over Simon's repeated cries of "No!" "What is she, a dog?" |
![]() Captain America | Captain America had his face buried in his hands. "I won't even enterain the thought." |
Wolverine | "Even though they just spent twenty minutes explaining that the girl's out-to-lunch and that the world is in every kind of danger because of her?" Wolverine asked. |
![]() Captain America | "There is always a way," Captain America said solemnly. |
Emma | "Charles, be honest," Emma said. "You're the most powerful psychic mind on the planet. Can you help her?" |
![]() Xavier | Xavier sighed. "If I could, Emma, I wouldn't be here having this conversation." |
Emma | Emma looked over her shoulder. "Doctor Strange... is there anything in the mystic arts that could help her?" |
![]() Doctor Strange | "I don't know," Doctor Strange replied. |
Emma | "Have you been able to help her thus far?" "No." "Have you tried everything you possibly can?" "At the moment, yes." Emma took that to mean that her point was made on that front. "Anyone else have-" |
![]() Doctor Strange | "But I am still researching," Doctor Strange added. |
![]() Captain America | "So that's it, then," Captain America said. "He's still working on it. We let the doctor do what he has to do." |
Wolverine | "And what if the Witch gets bored in the meantime?" Wolverine countered. "I've known Chuck a good long time... If the guy says he can't hold her much longer, he can't hold her much longer." |
![]() Captain America | "No," Captain America said firmly. "She's not an X-Man. She's an Avenger. The Avengers say no." |
Emma | "Well, we haven't heard from all of them," she pointed out. "She is a mutant threat. And we X-men have dedicated our lives to dealing with mutant threats." |
Kitty | "Threats to mutants," Kitty corrected, finally speaking up from where she'd been sitting with a sinking feeling in her stomach listening to all of this. "Not mutant-" |
Emma | "We do both," Emma said. "This one- Wanda- is both. If word got out that-" |
Kitty | "This is wrong," Kitty insisted. That's all there was to it for her. She didn't care about the arguments. Team Cap, all the way. |
Emma | Emma ignored her. "If word got out that the Witch was responsible for what happened to the Avengers... that a mutant killed the beloved heroes of the city... if the world found out that an out-of-control mutant with reality altering powers was out there somewhere with a screw loose, it would set mutant/human relations back to the Stone Age. That would be it for us." |
![]() Captain America | There was some logic there, terrible as it was to admit, and Captain America looked around the room. "Avengers?" |
![]() Carol Danvers | "She's an Avenger," Carol said. "It's our call." |
![]() Iron Man | "I agree," said Iron Man. "I'll never agree to killing her," said Simon. |
Wolverine | "Someone do the math for me," Wolverine said. "How many more of you does she have to kill before you snap out of it?" |
![]() Spider-Man | "Jeez," Spider-Man said, shaking his head. "So if any of my powers wig out on me, I can count on you to just kill me?" |
Wolverine | "Yeah," Wolverine answered. "Hope I can count on you to do the same." |
Cyclops | "Professor," Cyclops began, "I can't believe you would even entertain this." |
![]() Xavier | "Scott," Xavier said, and there was no hiding the note of desperation in his voice, "I don't know what to do." |
![]() The Wasp | "Wanda was like a sister to me," the Wasp spoke up. "I need to hear what she wants. I need to see her." |
![]() Carol | "Janet's right," Carol agreed. "Me too. Professor? Can you and Ms. Frost protect us from Wanda if there's trouble?" |
![]() Doctor Strange | "Together we can," Doctor Strange said. |
*****
Kitty | From HQ, it was off to Genosha. And the last time Kitty had been here it was because that sentient Danger Room was trying to kill them, and she'd had to return to the site of a mutant holocaust to talk some sense into the Sentinel that had killed them, and her father. As they flew over the ruins of the capital city, Kitty tried not to look, but she felt like she had to. And all she could see below is that this was what normal humans would do to mutants. As much as she never wanted to admit it, Emma might have had a point with her argument. She wouldn't agree with killing someone.... but still. |
![]() Xavier | Upon landing the Blackbird next to the Avengers' Quinjet, they'd been prepared to follow Xavier's lead... until his, "Oh no." |
![]() Captain America | And when they got to the damaged apartment where Wanda had been housed, they found the place empty. It was hard to tell if the disarray was new, or leftover from either the initial destruction of the country, or from something Wanda had done. "I don't understand," Captain America said. "Did Magneto move her?" |
![]() Xavier | She's not on the island," Xavier said, frowning. "I can't 'see' her..." |
Kitty | "We should get out of here," Kitty said. She was with telepaths and Doctor Strange, it wasn't like she wasn't feeling anything they didn't. But the air felt wrong here, like something really bad was about to happen. |
![]() Iron Man | "Doctor," Iron Man said, turning to Doctor Strange, "can you find Wanda-" |
![]() Spider-Man | "Uh, guys," Spider-Man said, "the bald guy just disappeared." |
Kitty | Sure enough, when they looked, Xavier and his wheelchair were both gone. There wasn't any way he could have left without any of them noticing. "We really should get out of here," Kitty repeated. |
Emma | Once again, she was ignored. "I found them," Emma said. "I'm not feeling anything in the mystic patterns," Doctor Strange said. "Wanda's not here." "I can see her," Emma insisted. |
![]() Doctor Strange | "Last time she used her powers, she was creating mystic patterns that I am not feeling here," Doctor Strange explained. |
![]() Spider-Man | "Listen, guys," Spider-Man said, "I've got this spider-sense when there's danger and it's not going off, so I don't know if-" |
Kitty | He was cut off by the creaking of the door, and more or less at once the group turned towards it. Kitty glanced at it, but said, "We need to go," and when she turned her head to look at whoever was next to her to make them listen, she realized she was all alone. Everyone else had vanished. She looked back towards the door, where there was a bright light that seemed to be getting closer, and closer, until the whole world went white. |
