Xavier School- Thursday morning
There was going to be a lot to do today and Kitty wasn't really looking forward to any of it, but it had to get done. She was even starting with the harder thing, because if she could handle this, she could handle counseling the students.
She knew Peter's habits, and found him standing on a hill overlooking the grounds. Someone had found him real clothes, and Kitty wondered if maybe they hadn't kept some of his stuff stashed away all this time. It'd make sense, considering X-Men seemed to have a good 50/50 shot at coming back from the dead. She stood next to him, and he gave her a little smile, but neither of them said anything at first.
Finally, Peter said, "I leave the world in terrible turmoil. I come back, same turmoil. Nothing at all different. Well, outfits are a little different." He looked over at her. "It is funny that it's you who finds me, don't you think?"
"No. I don't think it's funny," Kitty said. "I can't imagine it going any other way."
There was another moment of silence, probably because he was waiting for her to elaborate more. "Feeling better?"
"Better than last night," she replied. "Sleep helped."
"Hank should look at you."
Kitty nodded. "I'll catch him when I get some time. I have the kids to deal with first."
"You teach now?" Peter asked. Considering when he'd "died" she'd still technically been a student, that had to take some getting used to.
"Yeah. I mean, not here," she corrected. "I'm the guidance counselor here. I teach at a school in Maryland. I live there most of the week, and then come here for a couple days." .
He raised an eyebrow. "You sound busy."
"You have no idea," Kitty sighed.
Peter looked like he was considering this. "Jean is gone, you teach, we have an Avenger in the mansion-"
"About that," she said. This was the part she was nervous about. The last time Peter found out she had a boyfriend he had not reacted well. And while there were a lot of differences between then and now, and after three years being tortured in a vault he probably wasn't looking at Kitty as a romantic prospect, but she wanted to handle this a certain way. "He's from a different universe than the Hawkeye we know. And he doesn't live here. He lives with me in Maryland. I mean, not with me, we haven't made it to that point or anything-"
Handling this a certain way was obviously going great. Shut up, you explain your situation to your not-dead ex and see how you do.
Peter frowned at her. "Hawkeye's your boyfriend?"
...Or she could have just said that. "Yeah."
"Huh," he said.
"What's 'huh' mean?" Kitty frowned.
"I did not see that coming," Peter admitted.
"Oh."
"Are you happy?"
"Yeah," she said, smiling a little. "I really am."
"Then that is what matters."
And with that, Kitty decided she'd done at least one thing right today. ...Right, if babbly.
