The Xavier School- Westchester, NY- Monday after 1st period
Kitty took a cab up to the mansion. The others had things to do on the day the school opened, and part of her just wanted to do this on her own. When the cab pulled up and let her out, and she stood there looking at the building with her bags, she was stunned that it was completely rebuilt. It had been destroyed a few weeks ago, and now it looked exactly as it had when she'd first come here. The X-Men apparently had some amazing contractors.
When she phased in through the front door, though, it felt overwhelming being back here. Visiting to help fix things up had been one thing, but it'd been rubble. It was hard to get sentimental over rubble. Now everything looked exactly as it had before, and it was her first time being back inside like this since she'd quit. She'd quit because Peter died (after she thought her whole team was dead twice, after Doug died, after Brian disappeared, after Brian came back but Rachel disappeared in his place, after Illyana died…) and she couldn't handle it anymore, and she'd left without saying goodbye and never looked back.
Okay, she'd looked back because she sucked at really letting go of people.
God, she hoped she could handle things better than she could when she was seventeen.
Kitty dropped her bags in the foyer and walked over to the wall nearest the Danger Room, where they were going to be holding the introductory assembly for the students. Because walls were for other people, she phased her head through-
"Hi," she said, staring out at the crowd of students and teachers in the assembly that was totally already going on. "It's possible that I'm late."
"Quite so," Emma said, turning from her podium and not looking pleased at the interruption. "This, children, is Kitty Pryde, who apparently feels the need to make a grand entrance."
"I'm sorry. I was busy remembering to put on all my clothes," Kitty replied. Unlike some people, Emma.
"So gushingly glad you could join us," Emma said, and indicated for Kitty to take her seat next to Hank. "Miss Pryde will be acting as a student advisor and liaison to the administrative staff-"
"It's great to see you," Scott smiled, speaking quietly.
"Sorry about the timing," Kitty said. "Did I miss the Sorting Hat?"
"Just Scott's scintillating introduction speech," Hank told her.
"Even I was bored," Scott said.
"Since Professor Xavier is away on sabbatical," Emma was saying, "Mr. Summers and myself will be acting as heads of school. Doctor McCoy and Miss Pryde will round out the senior staff, along with Logan, who is… elsewhere."
Kitty frowned. Logan hadn't been around last time she'd been here, but this was a long time to be gone. "What does she mean, 'elsewhere'?"
"It means we've narrowed it down to 'else,'" said Hank.
"Now," said Emma, "this is a place of learning, not just about your mutant gifts, but about the world. Respect for your teachers, mutant and human alike, will be expected of all of you. Control of your powers, the safety of those around you, is of paramount importance. Violence of any kind will never be tolerated."
The second she said that, the ceiling smashed in, debris falling all around, and Kitty looked up to see a giant Sentinel reaching through the building at them. There were more coming, and immediately Kitty was on her feet, Scott was shooting his eyebeams at them…
And then Emma ended the simulation, leaving a lot of frazzled students and glaring staff.
"So," she said. "What have we learned? We have learned the first lesson. They will always hate us. We will never live in a world of peace. Which is why control and non-violence are essential. We must prove ourselves a peaceful people. We must give the ordinary humans respect, compliance, and understanding. And we must never mistake that for trust."
Well. Apparently that was how it was gonna be. Kitty wondered if she should be regretting this decision yet.
