A pet store on the mainland- Monday night

Sometimes when you had terrible weeks, you just had to go and look at kittens and other small furry creatures. So after group therapy, Kitty and Allie headed for a pet store- definitely not a pet store and not a shelter so it'd be easier to leave without taking all the pets- with that adorable goal in mind.

As soon as they got close enough to see the kittens in the window, Kitty said, "I'm really glad I left my credit card at home."

"Why? Don't you think Lucky would like a friend?" Allie grinned.

"The jury's still out on Lucky. Clint and I just had this discussion," Kitty smiled, tapping the glass to get the kittens' attention. "It's Lockheed I'm not sure about."

The scary vampire was not making cutesy faces at the kittens. Nope, not happening. "He wants to be top dog, well, dragon in the household?"

She saw those faces, Allie.

"He's a little protective?" she said. "And he hasn't even met Lucky yet so I don't know if I want to push it."

The little pink noses were her downfall.

"No, I guess if it's working for now, probably best to leave it be." Allie didn't want to see anything happen to Lucky. "But maybe someday."

"Someday. And on that day, it'll probably be a pet-adopting free-for-all," Kitty said. "Want to go inside?"

"Only if you swear not to let me walk out of here with more then a bone for Lucky," Allie requested.

"I promise. No matter how much we 'awww' we do not let each other walk out of here with animals. Except maybe fish," Kitty said.

"I'm not seeing the appeal." Someone had never seen the fancy betta fish.

"I think they're pretty much no work. The appeal is in the laziness," Kitty said, starting into the store (though the door and everything).

Allie followed, already checking out the dog toy display at the end of the first aisle. "Ahhh, good point. No need to walk them in the rain."

"And I think you only have to feed them once a day? I'm actually a little worried Lockheed would eat fish so I think that'd keep me from getting them awww aren't you cute," Kitty said, peering into the little kitten pen.

"Sounds like you might want to just go with a stuffed animal." No fuss, no muss, no accidental sushi for the dragon.

"They're adorable. So fuzzy looking."

"Fuzzy feeling, too," she said, picking up one tiny kitten to hold. "You can pick them up, as long as you don't walk out with them."

"I wouldn't have a clue what to do with one once I got it out of the store, so I don't think that will be a problem."

She lowered her hand into the pen and held it still, letting the kittens investigate at their own pace. Which meant the little black one immediately came over to investigate.

Meanwhile Kitty was comfortably holding her kitten and petting the top of its head with her finger. "You just have to feed them and love them and pet them four thousand times a day. Way more work than a fish."

That was her trying to be discouraging.

"It's the day thing that gets me," Allie admitted. "Especially now that the days are getting so long. Who knows what trouble this little guy could get up to." Unable to resist, she scratched the kitten behind the ears. "I like this kitten therapy."

"I'm pretty sure these little guys live to torment their owners in their sleep anyway, so your schedules might work out," Kitty teased, reaching with her free hand to pet a little white kitten in the pen who really wanted her attention. "And kitten therapy is a great followup to therapy therapy."

"You're not supposed to be encouraging me." Because the soft, fuzzy fur under her fingers wasn't encouragement enough. "Therapy therapy? That thing at the clinic?"

"Yeah. I thought I'd check it out, but it turned out o be kind of cool, all things considering," Kitty said, openly cuddling her kitten now.

You didn't want to let her around babies either. Seriously.

While Allie had enjoyed spending time with Caleb and Bethany, they were older and kind of self sufficient. An actual baby would send her running.

"Oh?" she prompted. "Good things or bad things?"

[Zzzzz....]

"Well... I mean, everyone's there because they're trying to deal with some bad stuff," Kitty said. "But everyone talked, and I don't think anyone really got too self-conscious, and Sam really seems to know what he's doing. It was just kind of cool to see that I can relate to other people and they can probably relate to me."

[Night!]

"That's good. Just based of the people I know on the island," Allie observed, "This is probably something that's needed."

"Yep. And I figure it's good situationally. Like, you know, go go through a trauma and you can go there to talk it out and get some input," she said.

"Does this guy Sam realize what he's getting himself into?" Individual trauma was one thing, island wide might be a little overwhelming.

"I warned him about some of the stuff when I met him. Showed off my powers so he'd believe me and all," Kitty replied. "I think he got the point when people started talking about their histories."

Unable to resist, Allie scooped up the kitten and rubbed her cheek against his head. "Again, knowing the people on the island, I can only imagine some of the histories," she said. "But hopefully it helps them."

"I'd cross my fingers, but I have a kitten," Kitty explained, holding up the cat, which immediately started mewing. "Oh, poor baby, I moved you. What a tragedy."

"A terrible tragedy," Allie snickered. "Emergency cuddling is required."

"So do you have any exciting plans for the summer?"

"I'm still going to be teaching, but otherwise... Probably camp out at Clint's a lot, and hope this summer's better than last year," she said. "How about you?"

Allie shrugged. "Other then harassing the Portalocity office on a regular basis, I don't plan on doing much. Except taking Nick up on his offer of unlimited motorcycle rides up to Baltimore and wherever else we decide to go."

"Okay, that sounds like fun," Kitty told her.

"I'm kind of getting addicted," she admitted. "It's like flying."

"If you're gonna get addicted to anything, that's a good one. And maybe you can get him to teach you," she said.

"I know how already. Kind of." Because she was smart enough to realize there was a huge difference between driving on a deserted highway in a post apocalyptic world and Interstate 95. "Back before I first came to Fandom, Zeke and I were trying to catch up with the raiders that had taken his family. I took a dead raider's bike and taught myself to ride. It was the only way we could get to them in time."

"Good incentive to learn," Kitty said, actually impressed she'd been able to teach herself. "Here I just had one of my teammates teach me as a 'just in case' type of thing."

Learning was easier when you didn't have to worry about accidentally killing yourself.

"For those times when you need to make a quick getaway? Does that happen a lot?"

"You'd be surprised how often it happens," Kitty said, making a face at her kitten.

"Maybe once, but now I know I better." She had too many friends with interesting/complicated lives.

"I think I might have to learn how to drive here. I can't let Nick have all the fun."

[Zzzz...]

"There's enough free time here. You might as well," Kitty said, putting her kitten back down when it seemed like he was getting squirmy. "You never know when it might come in handy."
