Kitty had figured that coming back from vacation would mean wishing she was still on vacation while trying to put a lesson plan together for tomorrow because life was cruel that way. And while she was still wishing she was on vacation, she wished it was like, Tuesday, and the end of the week hadn't happened at all.

She'd been really wanting to check up on Derek while at the same time not looking forward to the conversation, and this afternoon had her heading to the house. Of course, after a moment of knocking (and a quick peek of her head through the door) it seemed like no one was there, and she decided to wait. By sitting outside. She really didn't want to piss anyone off more by waiting on the couch.

Derek laughed at that. "He's sorry he had to find out his idea of me as the big bad wolf wasn't right. So don't even think to tell me otherwise."

"He's not heartless, Derek. His idea of you is, yeah, totally wrong, but he didn't sign on to this just to hurt you," Kitty said. Okay, maybe she was apologizing for Clint some.

"Are you done making excuses for your boyfriend?" Derek asked, not exactly moved by her words.

"Possibly. It depends on how the rest of this conversation goes," Kitty said with a sigh. "How are you doing? Without using the words 'fine' or 'okay.'"

"Possibly." Derek huffed, shaking his head as he finished putting things away. "We're not having that conversation, Kitty."

"Why not?" she asked.

"Why not?" Derek asked, giving her an incredulous look. "Think about what you came here for and try asking me that again."

"To ask if you're okay?" Kitty countered.

[justlurkinghere]

"To not feel guilty for your boyfriend's actions," Derek shot back.

"Once again," Kitty said, "I'm here because I want to see that you're okay. Because you're my friend and you got tortured and people died and there are plenty of reasons for legitimate concern. I'm not that self-serving, okay."

"And I really don't believe you," Derek replied, turning on heel to glare at her.

That actually really hurt.

"God. Fine, believe what you want. You're just gonna do that anyway," she said, turning back towards the door. "Glad you're at least in one piece."
