25 Unicorn Street- Wednesday evening- Cubs party!

There was actually going to be a game seven. Kitty had maybe thought this would be a calm "they did good!" party, but instead you were going to get to watch her freak out on the couch, and probably freak out themselves because come on.

Cubs gear was preferred, but there were hats and little pennants to go around, and if you thought she hadn't stuck caps on the dogs you were incorrect and frankly should know her better.

There were plenty of snacks and drinks, and you could definitely find a place to sit.

And you'd look great in a hat.

Clint wasn't really into baseball all that much, but Kitty's enthusiasm was awfully contagious. So, he was wearing a hat and keeping the dogs equally festive and generally trying to be a good husband. Even he had to admit that games like this didn't happen all the time.

"I'm probably going to cry either way, just to warn you," Kitty said, looking pretty happy about it.

"I'll have tissues ready either way, and possibly hugs of comfort," Clint said. "Hopefully, it'll be happy tears instead."

"Best husband ever," Kitty grinned. "I feel like I should apologize for the last week-ish but really I'm dragging you along on a historic event."

"You're not dragging me along. I know how big of a deal this is," Clint said. "You should be apologizing to Lucky and Rook but luckily they're very forgiving."

"Also they're adorable. I highly suggest we make their pictures our holiday card."

Lol.

Steve showed up still slightly charred smelling from an emergency call he'd had to answer at some ungodly time in the morning.

"I heard there was baseball here?"

"There is!" Kitty greeted him, holding out a hat. "No New York, sorry."

She wasn't really sorry.

"You seem very sorry," Steve said dryly as he put on a Cubs hat.

"Sorry. It's the second happiest day of my life," Kitty admitted.

"First one was when they won the pennant?" he teased.

"When I got married. But it's close." Joke. "So how've you been?"

"Well, today I had to save San Francisco from sentient trolley cars," he said with a sigh. "So it's been...interesting."

"That is a new one. We also have alcohol if you need it," Kitty said, casually. She knew how these things went.

"Alcohol doesn't really work for me," Steve said. "Good baseball will help, though."

"So we're watching basketball, right?" Jessica trolled when she joined the party.

"You're hilarious. Here's a hat," Kitty replied, holding one out.

"I'm a New Yorker," Jessica said to explain why she wasn't taking it. "Even if I'm not a baseball fan, I have my own tortured blue team."

"And yet you're here," Kitty noted, hat unmoved.

"I didn't like the Knicks' chances tonight," Jessica suggested with a shrug.

"Well, welcome anyway. And I'm a cheerer so you'll have to deal with that." The hat was still out.

Eliot wasn't exactly a baseball fan. He wasn't as anti-fan as he once was, though, and with Hardison still chin deep in his latest computer project, Eliot was willing to fill in to keep the Chicago fan count up.

He did get there a bit late, though. He didn't want to look too enthusiastic.

"Welcome! Would you like a cap, or a flag?" Kitty greeted him.

Eliot raised an eyebrow at the offerings. "Flag." He only wore baseball hats for cons. "Bought out the local swag shop, huh?"

"Had to. This might happen only once in our lifetimes and we need something to potentially look at tomorrow when we're reminding ourselves it wasn't just a dream," Kitty stated.

". . . Right." Sorry, Kitty, Eliot was a bad baseball fan. "These guys are the ones with the goat, right?"

Okay, now he was just being a brat.

"We can't say the G-word in this house until tomorrow. Which is a rule I just made up," Kitty said. "We're a superstitious bunch."

"So -- that's a yes, then." Eliot nodded and watched one of the plays. "Surprised Cleveland made it this far."

He knew nothing about the Cleveland team. He just didn't like the city.

"They're not awful," Kitty said, eyes on the TV. "Kind of feels like this is the matchup it should be, given the extremely weird year."

"You mean for baseball it's weird, or the whole year in general?"

It was honestly hard for him to gauge year weirdness. His life tended to be fairly strange anyway.

"Year in general. Years from now when they're doing I Love the Teens or whatever on VH1, they're going to spend the whole hour wondering if this year was just full of drugs."

She was probably not wrong. Though hopefully it would not be called I Love the Teens.

"And here I was hopin' nostalgic retrospectives would be done with," Eliot said. "S'pose that's too much to hope for."

"We're living in a time where they're rebooting everything," she pointed out. "Good luck with that."

"See, this is why I don't own a TV."

There were several large screen televisions in his house. But Hardison installed them without asking, so Eliot figured they didn't count.

"Is that the reason you came here to watch?" she teased.

Eliot chuckled. "Parker'n me are here to represent while Hardison's busy. Don't actually usually get into baseball, myself."

In case that wasn't obvious.

"It's not for everybody," she allowed. "But these last few games have been heart attacks."

"I live with a guy from Chicago." About as officially as he was married to a guy from Chicago, anyway. "I managed to pick up on that."

Parker hadn't minded waiting. Because she knew they would win. Of course. No worries here.

...unless it looked like they needed help. Then she'd be looking into time travel and stuff.

Parker had been totally patient. For Parker.

"See? I told you we wouldn't miss anything important."

Eliot was not a good judge of "important" in this particular instance.

Parker gave a snort, and batted the foam finger around. "If we had, I would be blaming you. Blaming. You." But she was too ebullient under the impatience to hold onto it for long. "They're winning! They're winning already! I want to call in to a radio show and tell them how important this is!"

Eliot laughed. "Be my guest. Pretty sure they already know, though." Or at least knew how to pretend they did.

HE would hear Parker on the phone in a little bit, talking very fast in a Sophie-driven accent, explaining why the Cubs were more awesome than anyone, and also due. So due.

"Did you ever think about sticking with the baseball?" She asked idly, then added. "Or the hockey? Or..."

"Nah." Eliot shook his head. "I mean, mighta been nice to finish off the season, but I'd never be able to make a career outta any of it."

He'd be way too recognizable, for one. There were still plenty of people who'd love to get their hands on him, be it for personal reasons or just to get a cool half mil from Myanmar.

"Hmm. Maybe we can get you to finish off a season of something sometime, for a job." What hadn't he done yet? "Do you play basketball at all?" Parker was all about making her people happy.

That startled a snort out of him. "I'm 5'10", Parker."

That was a no.

"So? Don't they have shorter leagues? Like they do women's leagues?"

What? It made about as much sense.

"Not on anything resemblin' a professional level," Eliot said. "You don't need to find me a sport, darlin'. I'm happy enough havin' a sandwich named after me."

Parker had a foam finger and a Cubs cap, and a solemn expression. "Hardison promised they would win."

Same way he'd promised her snow at Christmas. Yup. He could do that.

"I'm hoping he's right, and I love that you came prepared," Kitty grinned.

Parker gave her pleased little embarrassed smile, and said, "I like it when the underdogs win. Also, no one should go 100 years without getting into first."

She'd wondered about that goat and the curse since she got to the island.

"Right? I've had generations of my family go without a win," she said. Didn't matter that the older generations hadn't been born here. "It's time already."

Pakrer gave a firm nod, and tugged on the brim of her Cubs cap. "Also, I think I've almost cracked the Cleveland Indians' pitcher hand signals, so, if I have to, we can call the manager and let him know what to look for."

Joe Maddon would appreciate that, certainly.

"You've been watching that close?" Kitty said, visibly impressed.

Parker did a complicated series of gestures that requested a cutter, then a fastball, and a heater, plus a side commentary that yeah, the ump was blind. "It's important to know what's going on when they think it's a secret," she said soberly.

"I feel like I should have didn't less time texting my mom and more time studying," Kitty admitted.

"Naah. Bonding is important. So are moms." IF Parker had any idea where hers was, she'd be.... probably not calling her anyway. "And the codes will still be there next year, too."

"You'll have to teach me before then. I'll be able to prepare myself better for game heart attacks," she reasoned.

Sometime around the rain-delay, Parker's gestures with the foam finger got more emphatic, as if she thought the players could see her.

"NO! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? NO!" That was not what she signaled!!!

Which is hard when the game's not on yet but there'll be a lot of cheering over good stuff.

And right around one am, the neighbor's would hear Kitty shrieking with happiness again, and she wasn't even sorry. In fact she hoped someone got it on tape.

Parker might have been making noises dogs could hear. Sorry, Lucky.

We are living in a parallel universe.

I LOVE THIS PARALLEL UNIVERSE. IT IS AWESOME HERE.
